Two coaches walk into the same situation. The client is stuck. Has been for years. They know what they should do. They explain why they haven’t done it. They articulate the problem beautifully.
The first coach listens, reflects, asks open-ended questions. The session ends warmly. The client feels heard.
The second coach stops the client mid-explanation. Asks one precise question. Waits. The client goes silent. Something shifts. By the end of the session, something that has been running for 10 years is over.
Same situation. Completely different outcome.
The difference is not empathy. Both coaches care. The difference is execution. One coach is having a conversation. The other is doing surgery.
Coaching certification doesn’t teach you the second approach. Practice does. Direct feedback does. Real sessions with real stakes do.
If you’ve been having good conversations but not producing real breakthroughs, you already know which coach you’ve been. The question is which one you’re willing to become.
